You might also want to include your name and phone number (if that number is not likely to change in the near future.) Personal logos and snail-mail addresses don’t add much and (film), they just waste precious page space but I#8217;ll have to do another post about sociological imagination all that#8230; Be creative.

That’s what you do. (film). Spend the money to make it look nice. Don’t let cost-cutting prevent you from cabbage vitamin c making the cut. Rosewood (film). Don’t crowd the pages with too much art and research, don’t crowd the portfolio with too many pages. As I said before, less is more. Cut cut cut. If you don’t have enough good work to fill the portfolio, get a smaller portfolio. I think twenty-five pages is about the (film) limit. Bassanio. An overflowing portfolio is rosewood, like one of Carlos Santana#8217;s guitar solos.

Even though the recycling speeches work might be demonstrating technical prowess, too much of it is rosewood, downright exhausting. Card. It#8217;s a pity when someone crafts a portfolio full of fantastic work that wears people out. Don#8217;t over-stay your welcome. Special Thanks: I would like to rosewood (film) thank our “anonymous recruiter” (a bona fide insider from one of those “big studios”) for the merchant bassanio the wonderful insight that helped to make this post even more valuable. Each resume or portfolio should be specifically tailored to cabbage the job in order to rosewood showcase relevant abilities, and the #8216;presentation#8217; is more than just the card physical work or the resume itself, it includes all of those interactions that go together to make up the #8216;interview#8217;. Rosewood (film). Makes sense to me! You got it, Mike! Although I, personally, prioritize portfolio OVER resume in a big way. So when I#8217;m in a pinch and I#8217;m trying to decide what to focus on, portfolio always beats resume. What Important Consumer In Society?. Note to Self: Remove Grandma#8217;s punk band logos from my portfolio#8230; This, along with your earlier Portfolio Pitfalls, series has given me a lot to (film) chew on paper free, as I approach putting together a book and online portfolio. Rosewood (film). I#8217;d also like to bassanio point out a related piece of rosewood, advice from you from Chris#8217;s ArtCast when he said that #8220;projects are the new resumes#8221;(paraphrasing) While I don#8217;t think that projects should or could take the place of a traditional portfolio, I can say that that advice has helped push me to finishing some projects, and imagination, that I have landed freelance work as a result of rosewood (film), someone seeing other projects I#8217;ve worked on.

I think that falls into the idea of the portfolio as the whole enchilada, fitting in with your professional identity that you present to and assholes the public. Just my (long-winded) 2 cents#8230; This is so encouraging to hear, Phil. I#8217;d love to know more about rosewood these projects you#8217;re finishing#8230; Thanks for card game the interest Chris. A couple years ago, I made a poster that I put up for sale and that led to me landing a job illustrating a children#8217;s book. (#8220;Mom#8217;s Backyard Zoo#8221; by (film), Susan Ferris#8230; http://philrood.blogspot.com/p/for-sale.html) In shopping the book around to my local libraries and books stores, I was hired for a couple spot illustrations by some independent book stores(indie stores are the best!). It#8217;s a great example of how finished projects have led to other finished projects, and it#8217;s also led me to want to finish more and more work and keep raising the card bar on myself. I am currently working on a couple short form comics(drawn and rosewood, waiting to be colored) and am writing and speeches, thumbnailing illustrations for (film) my own children#8217;s book, which is and assholes card game, all new territory for me as far as writing goes. I appreciate you asking about this Chris and for all the rosewood (film) content here, at Paper Wings and on your podcasts, it#8217;s been really encouraging and helpful as I step out of my comfort zone. WOW! It#8217;s so inspiring to hear about how you got out there and beat the streets to land some good gigs. Amazing.

Very inspiring to hear about this stuff. I kind of forgot about recycling it, and agree, finished projects definitely create more momentum and rosewood (film), speak volumes on vitamin c, our ability to (film) work with others, trustworthiness and overal credibility. To Chris, great to read over the article again after a while. Also, the interview with Brian McDonald was super inspiring, so thanks again! When you mention no original art in the physical portfolio section above, what do you mean by that? For example, I create an illustration in marker or some other non digital media, do you mean to include a print copy of that work, as opposed to the original illustration? I realize I replied to another person#8217;s comment rather than to the whole article, I scrolled down a little too far, and it was my first time commenting on one of your articles, I apologize. Hey Jennifer, I think that is what he meant, yes. You don#8217;t want to hand someone a bunch of your original pieces that could smudge or wrinkle or who knows what, and clean, uniform pages are much more presentable.

It protects your work, your potential employer#8217;s hands/conscience, and looks nice, to boot. Hope this helps! I have just started created new excitin work for my nex portfolio and this is very timely advice. I did take your advice last year and had a 10 piece portfolio, neadless to say I culled like crazy to achieve this, but the result was very clear directional advice where my strenghts and the merchant of venice bassanio, weakness were, and a great building block to go forward! My simple graphic design advice would be to make your artwork the same size on each page of your portfolio, in the same position, understanding different pieces have varrying hieghts and (film), widths, rescale so all have the same width or hieght, and it will create a consistency to the portfolio. Thanks again chris. Yeah, Tegan! The bunnies and architecture you posted are nice! Thanks! I#8217;m preparing myself by sociological, creating a strong #8220;city#8221; foundation before tackling my next background design!

Question: It says web portfolios and then digital portfolios would a digital portfolio be a PDF book? Is it advisable to send a PDF book via email to potential employers/hirers? I always assumed a web link would be best. Thanks #128578; Hey Andy, I think you#8217;ll want to (film) have both ready.

From what I#8217;ve seen, each company will request a format they prefer in viewing your work I#8217;ve seen requests for both pdfs and weblinks. The digital portfolio / PDF book should be well designed, like an art book (Chris said this above, but I had to remention). When I send any application by email or when I send any email these days, I always tack the link to my website at the bottom . It could be cool to provide a link on your website to download your pdf portfolio as well. Great tip, Scott! Sorry for any confusion, there, Andy. When I say #8220;Digital Portfolios#8221; I mean Web, iPad, PDF and anything else that might eventually evolve from those formats.

Basically, anything on a screen that is not limited by scarcity of persuasive, paper, ink, delivery, shelf space etc#8230; When I say #8220;Physical#8221; or #8220;Book#8221; I mean a more traditional, physical portfolio with pages of (film), art and recycling, a cover. Rosewood (film). I do recommend web links over emailing PDFs unless you have an invitation from the research paper person to rosewood send a PDF. Of Venice. Thanks for saving me on the #8216;PDF vs/ Links#8217; advice. Was about to spend several days creating the best darned PDF showcase EVER. Glad to get that time back BEFOREHAND! This is great stuff! Thanks Mr. Chris!

I#8217;m glad this question was brought up because I was planning on creating a #8216;digital#8217; portfolio and the PDF option is one I never considered but now plan to do when I have decent work to put in it. But, about the website/link to a portfolio: what tips can you give on how that should be displayed? Would a gallery of two image columns be acceptable? Can it be another website, like DeviantArt or is it better to put on (film), your own website? Any advice on what employers would be looking for? Great article Chris LOVE the pop culture references hahah Mr.

T, stay puft and the dude all in article its gonna be hard to top that. I was thinking the cabbage same thing. It#8217;s all in rosewood there! #128578; These tips are pretty useful, though I do wonder why you#8217;re saying #8216;original work#8217; shouldn#8217;t be in a digital portfolio. Free. I#8217;m a starter and rosewood, I just don#8217;t have that much commissions or projects to presidents card show, while I do have personal works that are sometimes even better than some of the commissioned work I did. So how should a starter handle with that? What also worked for me is to (film) go to portfolio review events.

Here in the Netherlands there is an research paper event for students and starters in the field and you can get like three portfolio reviews by rosewood (film), well known profs, for only 15 euro#8217;s and it really helped me to understand what works and what not. My art school also organized such an event themselves, which was really useful! I don#8217;t know if these things also happen in the USA or elsewhere, but it certainly pays of to presidents and assholes game show your portfolio to people and ask what they think of it professionally wise. #128578; Then again, I think this also comes from experience ad it takes a while#8230;I#8217;m still not that confident about my portfolio and I actually know what to do about it, but It takes a lot of time to get where you want when you#8217;re already graduated and need money. I think when Chris says “original work”; I believe that he is referring to the actual physical piece of art work. I think he is meaning make sure that it is (film), a copy. That way if you have to leave your portfolio with someone, you won’t have to of venice bassanio stress about getting it back. I am in a similar situation as you described. I am currently finishing school and the few pieces of paid work I have done are not included in my portfolio since they are not relevant to an animation portfolio. Portfolio construction can be a confusing and laborious task. Good luck to you. Rosewood. Thanks, but I don#8217;t understand how you could put physical work in a digital portfolio, maybe I#8217;m confused or missing something here..

Thanks anyway, good luck to is the organization you too! Petra That was my mistake. I meant to write #8220;Physical#8221; instead of #8220;Digital.#8221; It#8217;s fixed now. So sorry for (film) any confusion. Hey Chris, love these tips glad to revisit them. I was wondering if another portfolio pitfall could be #8220;Lack of New Work.#8221; I see this especially with animators, but I#8217;ve seen it with other artist as well and it surprises me. But for presidents me personally, I wish I could pump out the rosewood new work faster to presidents card game constantly push the quality of my reel higher and higher (and get rid of the (film) old, inferior work). Even when you are incredibly #8220;talented#8221;, isn#8217;t a Growing, evolving portfolio stronger than a stagnant portfolio? I just would caution anyone not to add a piece to their portfolio just because it#8217;s new. It has to the merchant of venice bassanio also be good. (film). And if it means cutting another piece to fit the new one, then the new piece has to be BETTER than the one that might get cut.

It#8217;s the presidents and assholes game same dynamic we encounter with pieces we were hired to make. As I said in (film) the article #8220;Just because you got paid to cabbage c make a piece of art, doesn#8217;t mean it#8217;s portfolio worthy.#8221; And a wise bit of caution that is! Great advice all round, Chris, but the words that stood out for me were, #8220;Cut, cut, cut.#8221; And yes, that#8217;s something that Mr. T. should consider with his jewelry portfolio tho I wouldn#8217;t say that to his face, course. Rosewood. : ) I have been Mr. T fan for as long as I can remember. He#8217;s just so awesome. #8220;Cut cut cut#8221; is my favorite advice lately. When I give myself a limit on how many pieces I can have in my portfolio, and important organization in society?, I stick to it. I really have to look at each one and decide why I want it in there. Then hopefully only the best and most relevant pieces are left. Also if your not great at cutting out pieces come back to it weeks or months later.

I sometimes see things I didn#8217;t before and rosewood (film), I can cut more if I need to. Great point, Manelle. When I#8217;m in #8220;Cutting#8221; mode, I have to recruit my artist friends because I#8217;m too close to the work to know what I should and presidents and assholes card game, should not cut. Very sound advice. #8220;Digital portfolios#8221; and #8220;web portfolios#8221; tripped me up for a moment; I thought they meant the same thing. So sorry for the confusion there, Lindsey. My mistake. It#8217;s fixed now. When I say “Digital Portfolios” I mean Web, iPad, PDF and rosewood (film), anything else that might eventually evolve from those formats.

Basically, anything on examples, a screen that is not limited by scarcity of paper, ink, delivery, shelf space etc… When I say “Physical” or “Book” I mean a more traditional, physical portfolio with pages of art and a cover. Sam kirkman says. Very timely Chris! Being so limited technologically as I am, I#8217;m trying to use a template to put together my first, real portfolio site. Do you think this is a no no? I don#8217;t think I could afford to have a site professionally coded designed. Rosewood (film). I#8217;d really appriciate your first impression of what I#8217;ve put together.

Sam, I#8217;m a big believer in the merchant of venice bassanio WordPress. (film). You can use the free Lightbox Gallery Plugin to make an interactive slideshow portfolio with just a few clicks of the recycling speeches Mouse. I#8217;m also not a fan of static portfolio sites. I#8217;ll be posting more about this in rosewood the future but for vitamin c now I#8217;ll say that NO ARTIST needs to hire anyone to (film) build a site from scratch for them. All you need is WordPress and a gallery Plugin. There are also Premium Themes you can buy if you want to get really fancy, but, still, trust me. Stick with WordPress unless you#8217;re both a programmer and an SEO expert. sam Kirkman says. That#8217;s a relief to cabbage hear. Now my curiosity is up.

Blogs other social sites more important? I#8217;m a lookin forward to what your thinking. One thing too I appreciate about your post Chris is knowing what it is you#8217;re applying for or the type of work your going after. It#8217;s hard to decide isn#8217;t it? It also changes as we are exposed to more and more avenues of creative endeavor. This was a really great portfolio post, and rosewood (film), kind of comforting to someone like me who really doesn#8217;t know how to put together a portfolio! I have a question about cabbage digital portfolios, though. Is it more advised to make your own website for a porfolio, or can #8220;premade#8221; porfolio websites be considered professional?

I#8217;m thinking specifically about deviantART#8217;s Porfolio option for premium members. It#8217;s a really nice, slick, professional-looking program (or at rosewood (film) least I think so, and I#8217;ve read other artists affirm it as well), and presidents and assholes, doesn#8217;t even have any links to dA itself (unless you were to put such links in). It#8217;s an easy way for me to (film) present the best of my art, but would professional companies dislike it because it#8217;s technically through another website? Premade sites are just fine. I know WordPress also has some great options for recycling persuasive speeches elegant galleries and rosewood (film), personalized sites you might want to check those out.

Just be sure your gallery focuses on your work, contains your contact info, etc. I agree that Chris did a great job clarifying the of venice standards that will grab professional attention and I#8217;d refer back to his tips often as you continue to build your winning portfolio. Rosewood (film). Happy travels! Those dA premium portfolio sites are really nice. Sociological Imagination Examples. It doesn#8217;t matter where you host the site as long as the service is rosewood (film), stable, fast-loading, uncluttered and easy to navigate. The dA sites are, in my opinion, all of research paper free, those things. It was good to look over this while I#8217;m adding new work to my portfolio! Thanks Chris!

Oh, Sweet! Thanks, Kevin! I just want to say thank for you creating this website. You have given me more information and confidence than my school could ever provide! I have a couple questions about the (film) physical portfolios.

Could you give a visual example of a good physical portfolio to look out for? I#8217;ve seen portfolios ranging from leather covers to sociological metal, to rosewood (film) even custom handmade. Also, is it bad to have images varying horizontally and vitamin, vertically in a portfolio? Or will I have to edit the images to follow the direction of the portfolio? For example, if I bought a horizontal tabloid size portfolio, will I have to edit the images that are vertical to become horizontal for rosewood (film) consistency? I have opinions about all of these things, but ultimately, it doesn’t really matter. What’s really important is that the work INSIDE the portfolio is very strong. Card. I plan on offering a portfolio workshop in the future (after my Digital Painting Class ends).

In that class we will go through the actual construction, layout etc. so you might want to enroll in that when it is offered. Rosewood. There will be plenty of recycling persuasive, visual examples there. I recommend a cover that has your art on it so it’s not just a nondescript, black leather book. In regard to the horizontal/ vertical problem – in my opinion – I think you should lay the art out so that the art is as big as possible on the page, regardless of horizontal/vertical. …but you can group your horizontals and (film), verticals together so there is less rotation of the book when someone looks through it. The Merchant Of Venice. Glad you have found the site useful and inspiring.

That’s definitely the rosewood (film) goal. Thanks Chris! this has really made me think about my next application i knew the basics but most of the information has been really helpful! #128578; Great to hear, Ryan. Hope it helps. More good portfolio stuff to come! This is a great help for c any person trying to apply for rosewood (film) the industry. However, I am sightly confused at number 3. Paper. See what if you are a student who has just started on their path to an animation career and you are wanting to start about any where to learn. Such as basic things clean up artist, inbetweener, or any small job that most animation student should know how to do. Rebecca, I understand that although #8220;intent#8221; generally gets harder to determine the younger you are, the stronger the #8220;message of your portfolio#8221; is, the better your chances of getting hired.

Often, focus will strengthen your art and your portfolio as a whole. If nothing else, focus on and play to your strengths. Does that make sense? Thanks for bringing this article up, i really need this. I have some question about portfolio, i already did some work as Illustrator for rosewood (film) Children Book and bassanio, Cover Book Artist. Honestly i#8217;m not liking the style that i did for rosewood (film) the job, but writer and publisher really really like the most important consumer style and that kind of rosewood, style is the popular one and you can easily to get job as Children Book Illustrator using that style, in short#8230;it does sell. But i felt i already founded what kinda of persuasive, style that i want to develop in the future, so my question is rosewood (film), should i still put my previous work at my portfolio site? even though the style is not really my taste, but its does sell (at least in the merchant of venice bassanio my country), since this words kinda bugging me #8220;Just because you got paid for an illustration doesn’t mean it’s portfolio-worthy.#8221; Thank you, i hope you understand what i#8217;m trying to say because i still do a mistake when writing English since its not my native but i want to learn to do it better. I hope you don#8217;t mind some mispelled or wrong grammar.

I completely understand. This is a common struggle for illustrators. (film). I like doing lots of research paper free, different styles and rosewood (film), that#8217;s one of the skills I have a reputation for. That#8217;s why I show lots of different styles in imagination examples my portfolio. Rosewood (film). I can start on a new project and match the style on the first day. But that#8217;s harder to market and cabbage c, it#8217;s definitely not for everyone. If you put that work in (film) your portfolio and that kind of work is popular in your country, you#8217;ll probably get more offers for jobs like that. If you#8217;re just going to turn them all down then I don#8217;t recommend it. But if you don#8217;t mind working in the merchant those styles, they pay well and you need the work, then maybe put the (film) work in your portfolio for a while.

You can always take it out later. Free. Another great post making some really key points Chris, thank you. Rosewood (film). I would add that it#8217;s not good enough to have only a physical portfolio. This should be a redundant point but I#8217;m staggered by the number of illustrators who still only have a physical portfolio. Wow, I have to speeches thank you greatly for this, it#8217;s going to (film) be a great help when I craft my portfolio in the near future. What Is The Most Important Consumer Buying Organization. Just need to clarify on one thing, though. In Number 4, under the physical portfolio section, when you say #8221; No original work#8221;, does this mean artworks that are done for personal use, and rosewood (film), not artworks done for research companies/projects? Or is it something else entirely? Hi, Reuben. #8220;Original#8221; as in not the actual, real, drawing or painting if the piece was done traditionally. Prints only. Rosewood. By #8220;original work#8221; I meant actual pages pulled out of your sketchbook or traditional paintings on paper, board or canvas. Bassanio. …that statement only applies to traditional media.

With digital, every page in a physical book would have to rosewood be a print. …but I still recommend keeping the style of print the same from page to recycling persuasive speeches page. This is how many industry professionals review demo reels and portfolios: 1) Don#8217;t rely on Sound/Background Music. I watch reels with the sound off. If you are relying on the viewer listening to your audio for an art reel, please put text on rosewood, the screen saying so. Consumer Buying. 2) show your best stuff first, and make it prominent. I often watch them in fast-forward, stop and rewind if something is interesting. 3) Contract info in rosewood the front AND the back!! If your contact info is not on the presentation I will have to research paper free dig for your info#8230;bad.

The most important intent of a reel is to get a call-back. make it easy for rosewood (film) me to paper free do that! start and end your presentation with your name and contact info. Rosewood. 4) The bad detracts from the the merchant of venice bassanio good. It#8217;s not a zero-sum game!! For every good piece in rosewood (film) your portfolio/presentation, you get a mental +1, for every bad piece you get a -1. yes, you read that right. Bad artwork actually #8216;detracts#8217; from the good work.

If you have 10 samples and 6 are good and 4 are bad, that gives you a 2, not a 6. If you put only 6 peices up for review and they are all good, you#8217;ll get a 6!! Best of luck, ask for critiques if you get a rejection, sometimes people will give you a harsh critique, and you might need that to improve. Great, great points, Ross! thanks for the informative post. I will take your #8220;cut cut cut#8221; advice to heart. Don#8217;t want people to acquire wrist strain picking up a portfolio! Also do you recommend putting a resume in game a portfolio if none of the rosewood (film) work is art related?

Would potential employers want to know that I have had previous work experience prior to becoming an persuasive art student or are they only concerned with the rosewood (film) art itself? I#8217;m sure there are recruiters who want to see a resume. Some applications require one. And Assholes Game. But if you#8217;re going to a convention and rosewood (film), you#8217;re just going to card be hanging out and showing your book around kind of informally, I recommend keeping the resume out of the book. The only artists I see who have resumes in the portfolio are folks who don#8217;t have much experience.

So, my advice is to rosewood (film) keep the c resume out of the book. Let the quality of the work speak for itself. #8230;especially if you don#8217;t have a lot of experience. Instead, you can just talk with the person who is looking at rosewood (film) your portfolio about the noteworthy things you have done on various projects and for various clients. They will already know if you don#8217;t have much experience, so why shine a spotlight on it by putting a thin resume in there#8230;? Know what I mean?

Thanks for putting the thought and effort into sharing this advice with us! It#8217;s especially helpful for me, as I didn#8217;t figure out I wanted to get into concept art until after school. I studied Animation and Illustration so my portfolio is what most consumer buying organization, filled with all sorts of (film), different stuff. It#8217;s all work I enjoyed doing which makes it difficult to recycling persuasive focus a portfolio. I had two things that I wanted to ask about.

Firstly, I#8217;ve heard some conflicting advice between putting the kind of work you want to get paid for (sci-fi vehicles) and rosewood, showing art directors what they want to see (UI.) How can you cater a web portfolio to individual studios? It scares me to presidents game limit my portfolio when there appear to rosewood be so few jobs. Finally, I know AD#8217;s like to see ideation in a concept. How can I show this without showing too much? Thank you for your time and generosity! Thank you so much for persuasive share such an interesting and important information, it makes me think about a lot of stuff that I didn#8217;t consider before.

I was wondering though, when you write #8220;no original works#8221; in the physical portfolio, you mean that you should put copies on it? Question: In a web portfolio, is it ok to have a broad range of artwork as long as it#8217;s categorized into separate, tailored, pages that can be sent to specific employers or types of clients? chris soldano says. Thank you so much for rosewood (film) this site. As an c artist that got disillusioned by being offered a job jr year at SVA only to have their bubble burst after graduating leading to rosewood (film) retreating into research paper free, easy mode Graphic Design. Only to MANY years later find GD to be so constraining, unrewarding and not for me. This site was just what I was looking for. Again, thank you. This has been beyond insightful to read. I wanted to ask you three questions if I may. How do I present my work so that its refined enough to tell a sence of story yet not so refined they say #8220;go into (film), children#8217;s books#8221; I know a background is c, children#8217;s books is sometimes recommended for rosewood (film) visual development artists at vitamin c Disney.

Is it a good idea to rosewood include#8221; rough #8220;digital sketches of (vehicles/props/characters) to presidents and assholes show thought process before revealing the (film) finished #8221; polished#8221; concept, or is it irrelevant? How much should you stress mastering maya if you want to be a concept artist? Thanks for your time and what ever advice you can give, Hi Chris, thanks for blogging this useful post! I have one question if I may ask. Let#8217;s say an illustrator wants to send a potential client samples of only their most relevant portfolio work to that particular clientWould sending them a link to a custom sample site of your work (as well as a link to your whole portfolio site) or offering to embed (in the body, not attachments) images in paper an email be effective? Thanks for your time in advance, A few I have come across: *Printed portfolios should start end strong.

Online folios should have your best pieces up front. *show your thought process. *and spend some serious time assembling a portfolio. Every choice you make says something about you. Varsha Venugopal says. Rosewood. Thank you so much for your advice, sir. Of Venice. But I have doubts, sir. Can we include both illustrative works, comic works and (film), our 3D works in sociological imagination a single portfolio? or it should be made in (film) such a way like art portfolio and 3D portfolio?

If so, what is the page limit for a physical portfolio and the time limit for the showreel? so i follow this link off FACEBOOK and what do i find? a list with the presidents and assholes card game same old boring generic advice that every high school art teacher tells their students. (film). then i look at the website and what do i find? the same old generic and boring work! what a surprise! want to work really hard only to become replaceable in an industry full of clones? follow the advice on this website! or how about this instead? 1. do work that is so personal and unique to yourself and who you are that only you could do it. 2. Research. work harder than everybody else, and rosewood (film), have tons of fun doing it, until nobody can do what you do better than you. then it#8217;s not gonna matter if you spell check your emails or how many pages you put in your portfolio. people will seek you out for what you do and sociological, you won#8217;t have to compete with all the other generic and rosewood, boring work out there! -TWEET THIS QUOTE! That isn't to rosewood (film) say there aren't wrong answers - there are. These are those based on 'mis-readings' of your texts. But what your teacher or examiner wants is the merchant of venice bassanio, a reasonable, informed, explained and well-supported view . In a nutshell, that's it. An essay requires this from you: a succinct opening in which you give an overview of your response to the essay question. This is a kind of 'super-condensed' response that sums up your whole response in a line or two. you can add to the opening sentences, a very brief explanation of (film) wh at aspects of the paper free, text brought you to this view . If you can give, say, four - six aspects, then you are setting out the coming structure of your essay . There is no better way to begin an essay than like this.

From this point on you will never be left scratching your head wondering what to write next. the remainder of the essay is merely a series of PEE paragraphs that, point by point, argue the case for what you have just stated. Each point (P) needs its own paragraph and to rosewood (film) have support (E) from the text (either a quotation, or an explanation of some aspect of and assholes form or structure ) along with with an explanation (E) of how the text brought you to such a view, the rosewood (film), effects it created, the methods the author used to presidents and assholes card game create the effects and, finally, its relevance to the text, that is, the author's purposes . That's it. (film). Done and dusted! More detail below if needed. The secret of a good essay? Make it an argument ! An effective essay is a piece of writing that makes a strong and well-supported case for a stated viewpoint . The view it makes the case for bassanio, is your response to the essay title or question . You'll have arrived at after a couple of readings of the text, more if a poem, and one of which will be a so-called 'close-reading' when you annotate the text carefully in line with whatever the rosewood (film), essay question asks, seeking out cabbage vitamin support as quotations or explanations of useful effects created by form and structure . So your essay starts with a clear statement of your opinion . It could be something like, as an example: 'Shakespeare's theme of violence in Romeo and Juliet is shown especially effectively through the opening scene, as well as through the characters of Mercutio and Tybalt and an analysis of these three dramatic aspects will form the basis of this essay.' The opening overview is sometimes called a thesis statement . Rosewood. The 'thesis' is your response, i.e. the heart of your 'argument'.

It's what the essay goes on to explain and support to show that it is a view that is recycling persuasive, well - considered, based on the text and reasonable to hold . Essays are about (film) opinions, not facts. This point is crucial to most important in society? take on board. Rosewood. There is persuasive, never a straightforward right answer to an essay q uestion or title. There are wrong answers, of course - caused through, for example, misinterpreting the rosewood (film), text; but the 'answer' to an essay question will always be a point of view . Essays deal in opinions, not facts . This is why your teacher is looking to read your views and why you have come to think in research paper, this particular way. How do you arrive at rosewood a 'thesis' or overview? This is the recycling, tough part - there's no getting away from that. Not least, this is because it puts to the test your knowledge of the text and (film) your understanding of the essay title or question . The good news is examples, that when it's done and rosewood (film) done well, the remainder of the essay becomes much more straightforward and cabbage far more interesting to write, perhaps even a little exciting! The Outline Structure for an Effective Essay. As already stated above, this first paragraph needs to open with a clearly stated summary of your whole 'answer' along with an equally brief summary of the aspects of the text you'll be analysing to show your stated view is sound . It is these early sentences that provide the (film), major 'signposts' that give your essay and its general direction. Importantly, you need to important set a confident tone early on in the essay.

This can be done by adding in (film), a very few details to show you've grasped the text's big picture . This should be a brief comment (brevity is everything in the opening paragraph) on the major details of the story (poem or whatever) along with an equally brief statement of any relevant context , (that is the situation you feel brought the writer to want to write their text, including key aspects of their social , cultural and literary contexts ). Sociological. This will, though, always need to be focused on rosewood, the needs of the recycling persuasive, essay question . Notice how you are constantly seeking to avoid waffle and generalised 'bolted on' comments ; instead, you need to keep all you write tightly focused on the needs of the rosewood (film), essay title or question. This is the consumer organization, bulk of the essay. It is a series of paragraphs each introduced with a new clear important and wholly relevant point . Sadly, it's all too easy to open a in a way that inspires little confidence and which drifts from the essay question or argument. Avoid this by opening each and every paragraph in a way that is rosewood (film), clearly and directly developing the essay's 'answer' or argument . If you started by stating the four-six aspects you'll be covering in your essay, then you'll have no difficulty knowing what to write in these body paragraphs. This is where you restate, in a different form, your opening argument and give a brief list of the major points you have made along with a comment about the wider implications and relevance of what you have found. It will help to think back to the imaginary classroom situation. What would follow on from the highly condensed 'answer' you gave to your teacher?

Your teacher might say, 'Good, that's a fair view to hold - but why do you think that? Show me from the most consumer buying, text itself what made you think that way.' In the written essay, you'll need to be providing a whole lot more 'evidence' mainly in the form of quotations each one itself supported by a commentary derived from an analysis of the quotation's literary and linguistic content . However, with a central and guiding argument starting off and flowing through the entire essay, it now becomes much easier to search the text for rosewood, aspects and quotations that will provide good quality evidence to most important consumer organization in society? support the essay's points. Each point and supporting quotation needs to be followed by an analysis and comment . Some teachers call this the P.E.E. ( point example explanation ) or P.Q.C. (film). ( point quotation comment ) system. This is needed to explain how and important consumer organization why the aspect of the text or the quotation 'works' within the context of the essay question and the originally stated argument. Certain key questions need to be answered concerning each quotation used: What techniques have been used to make the language of the quotation effective? This means discussing the (film), writer's methods , e.g. through the creation of realistic dialogue; the sociological examples, use of an effective metaphor; through vivid description; onomatopoeia; alliteration; effective stage directions, etc. How does the method used affect the reader's understanding of the text and its themes (e.g. 'the effect of this passage is to create a sense of rosewood really being there for the reader. ')?

Why was this method used (i.e. what was the of venice, writer's purpose )? E.g. 'At this point on the story the author wants to gain the reader's attention in order to begin exploring the overall theme of injustice. ' MARK GRABBING TIP No. Rosewood. 1! Begin all of your paragraphs in such a way that it is absolutely clear you are focused on the essay question and its requirements, thus building up your overall argument. This will keep the essay on track and avoid the speeches, plague of poor essays: wandering, digression and waffle! What if your essay title isn't in (film), the form of a question? When considered as a question, you will often find it is easier to what most buying organization generate that all-important single main point of view to it - the main idea upon (film) which you will then base the remainder of research paper free your essay . Here is an example of a main idea succinctly stated (i.e. thesis statement ) that could be used to create an argument essay from the above question: The remainder of this - or any other - essay must then be no more than a linked series of points with each point explained , developed and supported in a paragraph of its own . Rosewood (film). These points must all be directly related to the main idea you have already explained in the opening paragraph, which itself is your response to the essay title or question.

Remember that each point - each paragraph - must set out to explain , develop and support some aspect of your over-riding main idea and recycling speeches nothing more . In this example, the paragraph that follows the opening paragraph - the first of what is called the body paragraphs of your essay - could be based on rosewood (film), the point that the theme of persuasive ambition is shown through what Macbeth and rosewood (film) Lady Macbeth are given by of venice bassanio Shakespeare to say and rosewood (film) do in sociological imagination examples, Act One of the play. The third paragraph of your essay - its second body paragraph - might then explore, develop and support how the theme of (film) ambition is shown through these two characters in the merchant, some part of Act 2, and so on. Below you'll find lots more detail and rosewood (film) ideas for writing an effective essay but with luck, the above will have given you the sociological imagination examples, basic idea. Aim to 'integrate' words or phrases from the rosewood (film), text you are studying directly into your own sentences (still using quotation marks, of course). Don't overdo this effective technique, but used sparingly, this use of 'embedded' quotations can help create a very impressive style, one that suggests you have a good grasp of the text and the essay question. Here are some examples of how to use embedded quotations.

The first is from the opening of John Steinbeck's novel, 'Of Mice and Men': 'Small and quick' George is presented by Steinbeck as a character in complete contrast to his friend, the lumbering and 'shapeless' Lennie. Here is the merchant bassanio, a similarly embedded quotation from rosewood (film) J B Priestley's 'An Inspector Calls': As the vitamin, Inspector says, 'We don't live alone' and (film) this is an important message Priestley gives his audience. Finally, see how this can be done using John Agard's poem, 'Half-Caste': Perhaps Agard also wants his reader to 'come back tomorrow' with a different attitude towards those they might feel are in any way different from themselves.

Use your introductory paragraph to state your point of view , i.e. (film). your thesis statement.

The purpose of your opening paragraph is to make clear your thesis statement - response to the essay question: that is, to what is the important buying in society? explain the focus of your argument - your main idea or point of view. Stated clearly at the opening to your essay, this shows how you intend to answer the essay question and what general direction your essay will take. Following your thesis statement, it's a good idea to add a little more detail that acts to 'preview' each of the (film), major points that you will cover in the body of the essay. This opening paragraph will then act to show - succinctly - where you stand regarding the questions and how you intend to answer it. Importantly, in imagination, the opening paragraph of your essay you will also need to (film) write an overview of the text, one that gives a succinct summary of the ' big picture ' of the the merchant, text; importantly, too, of course, this must be focused on rosewood, the requirements of the essay question. Giving a succinct account of the big picture of the text in the opening paragraph will show that you have engaged with and digested the detail of three key aspects of the essay: the essay question, the text and its author - perhaps also, a brief account of the author's context . Giving an of venice overview suggests a confident approach and is a hallmark of the best essays. TIP: It is always impressive to (film) incorporate into your own sentences, using quotation marks of presidents game course, a short suitable quotation taken from the text. Some teachers call this using embedded quotations. Keep all references to rosewood (film) the biographical background of the research paper, author and any aspects of his or her context entirely relevant to the essay question and (film) - brief! Remember that this is not a history or a sociology essay so very few marks are awarded for this kind of background information (although that does not mean it might not be useful). The majority of marks in an English essay are awarded for research free, the quality of rosewood analysis and cabbage interpretation you show - that is, an awareness of the author's uses of the English language and literary uses of this.

If your essay title does concern aspects of context try hard to discuss context by deriving your comments from quotations rather than by merely discussing aspects of context; in other words allow the text to introduce the context. TIP: avoid making simplistic and irrelevant value judgments of the text or its author. Saying that Shakespeare is 'a wonderful author' or that you think 'Of Mice and Men' is 'really good' will gain no marks whatsoever - this is no more than a kind of waffle that fills space with empty words that add nothing useful to rosewood your essay. 4. USE THE REMAINING PARAGRAPHS EFFECTIVELY. Follow the opening paragraph with a number of cabbage paragraphs that form the rosewood (film), 'body' of the essay. Each of these paragraphs are there purely to expand on and support your originally stated overall viewpoint.

Having stated your main idea in your opening paragraph, now you need explore this, develop it and provide support from the text for this. In the essay's body paragraphs your aim is to: follow the analysis system called P.E.E. or P.Q.C. For more on this see here ; work through the text's structure logically and, highlighting via the use of of venice bassanio quotations, explain how these led you to develop your point of view; comment on how the language of each of rosewood (film) these parts led you to form your interpretation: why did the author choose this particular type of language to make this point in the merchant, this way? How does it help a) the audience and b) the writer's purpose or theme ? discuss how this individual part of the text forms a useful structural part of the text by leading the reader towards an overall understanding of the themes, messages or purposes of the text; CRUCIALLY. each paragraph needs to develop a separate and individual point - one that will help to show how different parts and rosewood aspects of the text helped you develop your interpretation and viewpoint (this is the POINT part of P.E.E.); A useful tip is to open each paragraph with a topic sentence . This is a sentence that clearly makes a point that is developing your argument - your answer to the essay question - and, because it is, therefore, clearly focused on the essay question, it will keep your writing on track; Always aim to research paper provide support for each of the (film), points you make by referring directly to the text (this is the is the most buying organization in society?, EXAMPLE part of P.E.E.). You normally do this by quoting briefly from a relevant part of the text but you might choose to describe an event.

It's very important NOT to write a long description of WHAT happens. If you do you are merely 'retelling the story' - this loses many marks. In a play you also lose marks if you do not discuss aspects of the staging and stage action. You will need to follow each quotation with an explanation of and (film) a discussion on aspects of the language the author used in the quotation; this means discussing, for example, how aspects of the quotations literary, poetic or dramatic language works, including mentioning the speeches, method the writer used, the (film), effect the language creates and the reasons this might have been done (this is the EXPLAIN part of vitamin c P.E.E). You should also aim to show how the quotation helped you develop your overall interpretation of the text (this is (film), also the EXPLAIN part of P.E.E). 5. CREATE A LOGICAL STRUCTURE. Always work in a clear way through the text, from beginning to end. Avoid starting your essay by discussing a point that occurs half way through your text: ALWAYS begin at the beginning! Many students begin discussing a text half way through or even near the end then go back to an earlier point. Card. This ignores the rosewood, work the writer puts in to research develop an effective structure to their text - and (film) loses marks! 6. CONCLUDE EFFECTIVELY.

The conclusion to an essay is important but causes problems for many students. It should leave your reader with a pleasant and logical sense of 'closure' - a 'wrapping up' of the main ideas behind the essay . 1. Recycling Speeches. Re-state in a different form (using rather different words) your opening argument. 2. Rosewood. Now bring together your main points (again, avoiding simple repetition of the same words): list or summarise the main points from the sociological imagination, preceding paragraphs (use the topic sentences from rosewood (film) each paragraph to give you an idea). 3. End by identifying some of the wider implications and is the important consumer buying relevance that arise from rosewood (film) what you have found and explored. The conclusion should consist of just a few sentences but these will need to be made to sound convincing and authoritative . It's crucial to keep the conclusion brief and to the point and, above all else, to introduce no new material at all. ALWAYS WRITE ANALYTICALLY , NEVER DESCRIPTIVELY. Here is an example of how many students go wrong; don't worry, you won't - but this is a very common mistake:

In William Shakespeare's play, 'Romeo and Juliet', these are the first two lines of the sociological imagination, 'Prologue' as spoken by 'The Chorus': 'Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene. Rosewood. ' What follows is a typical 'retelling': an 'overview' or 'translation' that gains no marks : 'Here, Shakespeare is saying that the play is set in Verona where there are two dignified families.' Compare the card game, above 'description' with this analytical and insightful interpretation : 'The opening lines of the Prologue are important because they paint a picture for the audience of what could and should be - fairness and rosewood dignity. Paper Free. These words set up a powerful contrast to what is: the violence, hatred and bloodshed shown in the coming scene. It will be against this violent backdrop that the pure love of Romeo and Juliet will have to struggle.' Which approach and style would gain the higher mark? STUCK FOR WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT? THERE ARE FOUR KEY ASPECTS THAT APPLY TO ALL TEXTS AND WHICH SHOULD FORM THE BASIS OF ANY LITERATURE ESSAY. FORM, CONTENT, STRUCTURE AND STYLE. This is so very often ignored despite the fact that it provides the basis for the very best essays because it provides a subtle response. And subtlety always receives the highest marks ! When you write about a text at the level of its form , you analyse how aspects of it other than the (film), meaning of its language have been used by the writer in research paper free, important and effective ways.

To give you an idea of the importance of rosewood (film) form to a text, you yourself make use of the form of language when you speak loudly or softly , or when you chat or text a friend and use CAPS LOCK. Also, when you create short or long sentences or paragraphs you are affecting the look - the form - of what most important buying in society? your writing. This, albeit subtly, affects the way the writing is rosewood (film), received and interpreted. A novelist makes use of form by writing in sentences and paragraphs of varying lengths (you can imagine the paper free, effect a very short sentence, or a one-line paragraph, for example). The use of dialogue (spoken words shown inside speech marks) is also an (film) effective use of form, as is the use of underlining , bold or italics - or, in non-fiction texts, the game, inclusion of rosewood bullet points or sections. Poets are acutely aware of and very creative with the use of form. A poet makes use of presidents card form, for example, by consciously splitting up sentences into the lines of poetry . This allows the rosewood, poet to exaggerate a particular word by placing it at is the most important consumer buying the end of a line, or by rhyming it with a similar sounding word. A non-fiction writer makes use of form by using layout and appearance and by adding illustrations and photographs , and so on. All writers use form by using patterns of sound , such as by using alliteration , rhyme , rhythm , onomatopoeia , assonance and rosewood so on.

A playwright, of course, uses form very differently. When your essay concerns a play, therefore, you'll definitely be losing marks if you ignore aspects of form. In a play, much of the 'meaning' is created not from language but from what you see happening on the stage - the staging and stage action. This includes not just what the actors do but what they wear , where they stand and so on - all potentially important formal aspects of the play that should find their way onto your essay. Form is always worthy of comment when (but only when ) if it adds usefully to recycling persuasive the meaning, i.e. the content of a text. Every word and phrase has a literal meaning . Rosewood. This is its basic dictionary meaning.

It's sometimes called a word's denotation . E.g. 'In this story, the author's detailed description of darkness denotes the coming on of a storm'. This is a way of recycling 'playing' around with a word's meaning that makes writing more vivid , emotional and interesting . Words and phrases can be used differently from their literal context and given what is called a connotation . Using connotation or figurative language , a writer can introduce layers of meaning - especially emotional meaning (don't forget that many words can create both meaning and feeling ). The most common way this is done is to use a word not for its literal meaning but for rosewood, its metaphorical or figurative meaning. Another way is to use a word that acts as symbolically and represents something very different from its literal meaning. E.g. 'As well as suggesting the coming of a storm, the darkness also acts to suggest a metaphorical darkness is taking over the character's mind. In this way the darkness seems to be symbolising a kind of the merchant bassanio evil'.

Using a pun - a witty play on words - is (film), another way that meaning can be played with in an interesting way. Punning works because some words, in a certain context, can have an ambiguous meaning - two possible meanings - one of which might be humorous. Irony is a key way that writers use to create layers of meaning. Sarcasm is irony, but this is a spoken form of irony that is intended to the merchant of venice bassanio hurt someone's feelings by ridiculing some aspect of them. Rosewood (film). It's a crude, easy kind of irony not really subtle enough for writing. Most Consumer In Society?. Irony is usually subtle , sophisticated , edgy and rosewood (film) witty ; an altogether more intelligent use of language.

But irony can also be difficult to recognise - yet it is probably true to say that irony is one of the speeches, most common means by which a sophisticated writer creates layers of meaning in a text . Irony works because when it is recognised, it engages the reader very much more closely with the text. This is because, rather like solving a puzzle, there is a real enjoyment and satisfaction in unpicking the various levels of meaning created by rosewood the irony. Creating an 'ironic tone of voice' in writing is much harder than in most important consumer, speech because the original sound of voice and facial expression or body language of the speaker are absent. To create an ironic tone (or any tone, for rosewood, that matter), words have to be chosen with great care. It is a key reading skill to be able to detect this as it tells you what attitude the writer is taking towards their subject matter. An example of irony occurs in an old story by O. Henry called 'The Gift of the Magi'.

This story of poor young lovers ends with the boyfriend selling the one thing he owns of value, his pocket watch, in recycling persuasive speeches, order to buy his girlfriend an rosewood (film) expensive hair comb; equally secretly, she has all of her long hair cut off to sell to a wig maker so she can afford to card buy him. (film). a chain for the merchant, his watch. Structure is the rosewood (film), way a writer consciously 'shapes' a piece of and assholes writing in an attempt to rosewood (film) make it as effective as possible for their audience and their purpose. It is important to the merchant of venice bassanio comment on the structure of rosewood (film) a text, e.g. 'The way the author slowly builds up the paper free, tension throughout this chapter helps create a feeling of rosewood real excitement and mystery'. Style is the way a writer or speaker consciously chooses language and language features to and assholes game suit a particular audience to achieve a specific purpose . When you aim to rosewood convince your mum that Friday's party cannot be missed, you will consciously adapt your style to one that is more emotional and persuasive! Some famous writers have a particular style of their own that is quickly recognisable.

John Steinbeck, Charles Dickens and William Wordsworth are three such writers - here, a writer's individual style is sometimes referred to speeches as the writer's 'voice'. Your primary job when analysing and discussing a text is to rosewood comment on its style - on what are called the stylistic or language choices its writer has made, especially those that seem to you to have been chosen to create a particular effect to sociological achieve a certain purpose. So. Rosewood. if you are commenting on the form and content of a writer's language, you are commenting on the writer's style . COMPARING TWO OR MORE TEXTS. Even though it's a central part of the mark scheme, and always made clear in the essay question or title, each year many students still manage to write their comparison exam answer or coursework essay and forget to compare and contrast the texts . Aside from sociological imagination examples not knowing the texts sufficiently well, failing to compare and contrast is the number one reason marks are lost in this kind of rosewood essay. When writing about more than one text, your opening paragraph should be used to give the briefest details of each text (i.e. your writing needs to be succinct !). The Merchant Of Venice. This will mean being even more careful and sparing when you write an overview of each text, in (film), which you give the big picture . There are two methods you can consider using when comparing texts:

1) Write about the bassanio, first text fully before moving on to the second - still using the techniques outlined above; but when you go on to write about the second text, you must compare and (film) contrast it with the first. 2) Alternatively, and this makes the most sense when thinking about the argument essay, you write about both texts as you proceed . This allows you still, as shown above, to and assholes card create a central argument , one in which examples to support the points are taken from one or both texts as relevant to the point. This second method is the more complex and sophisticated of the two.
