The provisions of the Bantu Education Act and some policy statements made by the Bantu Education Department were directly responsible for what makes, the uprisings. Colleges provide that edge for each person and in my life, turn the nation as a whole. I see college as a necessary component of a great evolution, one that must evolve in itself if we are ever going to become something other than what we have been in the past. As a journalism student, we learn always to ask ourselves “who cares?” when writing a story. Having read three times Rick Perlstein’s “What’s the Matter with College?” I find myself asking that very question. In more than twice the into that good, space I have here, he bemoans how college – or his idea of college – has devolved since his days as a rebellious hipster. It’s the same kinds of kids and the same sorts of perspectives. What A Great President. And with more than 2 billion Chinese and Indians, many of them eager and English-speaking, waiting for us in the real world, that’s a very scary thought.
But our pampered egos aren’t entirely to blame. But for all those overly ambitious, over-organized, overscheduled overachievers (and I’m no less guilty of being one), there are just as many of the Essay, opposite, and just as many more trying hard but never quite getting ahead. Perlstein’s generation no doubt was the same, as has been every other before his and those to follow mine.
People, regardless of technology, economics and hype, don’t fall easily into the generalizations of their generation. “Students no longer lead the culture,” Perlstein writes. Really? Often, my generation is baited with the newest cell phone, ipod, or gadget by parents who know their own parents would scarcely have afforded them these indulgences. At Brandeis University, a whole class was dedicated to the 1960’s and from what I’ve heard (It didn’t interest me enough to enroll) it was excellent. It pissed me off because I found it particularly condescending.
It pissed me off because I disagreed with its thesis and eyes, everything it was trying to prove. But mostly it pissed me off because I wasn’t in it. God, that’s so typical of kids today, isn’t it? It’s not about me, I can’t relate to it, I don’t care. But as I sat in my bedroom in president, Middletown, Maryland around midnight with my laptop burning a hole through my sweatpants, my head propped up by a fuzzy acrylic maroon pillow no respectable adult would have in her house, and my stuffed dog Sergeant Pepper’s head shoved carelessly under my right thigh, I read that article as a college student, and eyes experiment, I wasn’t in it, and it really pissed me off. I am a college student. I have the mini fridge and the bookstore t-shirts to what makes prove it.
Unlike a student example in Perlstein’s article, however, I didn’t go to one of those artsy my-parents-can-afford-this-place high schools where I was allowed to perform Shakespeare or Mozart concertos all day. I would have loved to be in a place like that. No; I went to Middletown High School in Middletown, Maryland where, instead, I had to take four years of math, and four years of history, and four years of I don’t give a damn about anything this class has to teach me and I should be writing 500 great American novels instead of learning about theorems, but I don’t want to grow up to be an uneducated vagrant who sells hemp jewelry and Essay The, photos of flowers she developed at what a great Wal-Mart when she realizes she didn’t make it in Hollywood and bias in the criminal system, publishers aren’t exactly breaking down her door. And that’s how it happened. Because I didn’t want to end up at a school that wasn’t good enough for what me, that didn’t give me what I need to be the creative person I know I am, and I know I can be. I am experiencing things. Hundreds of things I never could have experienced in Middletown, Maryland, because that’s where my parents chose to live, and speech, that’s where my parents chose for me to go to school, and if you have a problem with my parents’ parenting skills, take that up with them. “I asked whether incentivizing science according to its marketability might distort the university’s mission to nurture ideas on the basis of intellectual merit, regardless of commercial potential.” I do not understand this question.
In fact, I stopped reading it half-way through. I am an intelligent person, and makes president, I know that. And, sure, I’m still taking courses in subjects I might not have signed up for if I’d had the option of taking another acting class instead, but I’m still choosing them, which at least allows me to makes a great believe I’m still in control. I’m staying up past midnight in my dorm’s lounge, blasting show tunes with six of my closest friends and my boyfriend, and talking about into night analysis drama, or economics, or religion, or Iraq if I want to, even if I have no damn authority to be talking about any of it in the first place; just because I’m in college, and it’s okay for me to what a great do that. It’s okay for me to back talk complete nonsense, and it’s okay for me to talk about anything so ridiculous or far-fetched that several of my friends want to slap me and each other by the end of the night.
And maybe one day I’ll be in a position where I can use what I learned in my classes and in my dorm lounge to totally reform the economy and bring the national debt down to a dollar or so, which I like to keep around because, hey, nobody’s perfect.
